About the Basque Language

The Basque language is spoken by an estimated 1,000,000 Basque people living in the region of north-central Spain and southwestern France know as Basque Country with about 200,000 Basque-speaking people living elsewhere in the world. Basque represents the only remnant of the languages spoken in western Europe before the incursions of the Indo-European-speaking peoples changed the dialectical landscape of the region. Many scholars have tried to link Basque to the Caucasian languages, Etruscan, and even to certain African languages, but most scholars regard Basque as having developed in isolation with no known linguistic relatives. Though Basque was spoken well before the days of the Romans, who brought Latin to the Iberian Peninsula, today it is written using the Latin alphabet. Basque holds the status of official language within the Basque regions of Spain, which consists of the entire Basque Country as well as parts of Navarre. Basque is one of Europe's most intriguing languages.
