About the Belarusian Language
Belarusian, also known as Belarusan, Byelorussian, and Belorussian, is one of the three East Slavic languages, a family which includes Russian and Ukrainian. It is today the official language of Belarus. During the 16th century, the term "Ruthenian" was used to refer to the language that is spoken in modern Ukraine and Belarus. Due to a gradual process of separation, which accelerated greatly during the 17th century, a total linguistic division between the languages spoken in the south (Ukraine) and the north (Belarus) came into being. Belarusian has been written since the fourteenth century but, as in the Ukraine, both Belarus and the Belarusian language have been subject to heavy Russification in modern times. The traditional Belarusian alphabet is Cyrillic, which has been in use since the ninth century. There are today about 10 million speakers of Belarusian living in Belarus as well as areas of Poland.
