About the Catalan Language
Catalan is the official government language of Barcelona (and all of Catalonia). A mixture of Romance languages, especially French and Spanish, Catalan is spoken by roughly seven million people, most living in Catalonia. When visiting Barcelona, one is likely to encounter the Catalan language. Many landmarks, street signs, and public facilities are marked in both the official language of Spain, Castilian, as well as the Catalonian's own regional language. The first known text written entirely in Catalan is the translation of a small section of the Liber iudiciorum, the Visigoth code of laws, from the second half of the12th century. The real introduction of the language came in the late thirteenth century in such literary works as Chronicle of Peter the Ceremonious and the Book of Deeds. During the Franco years, the use of the Catalan language was not permitted and its use was subject to harsh punishment.
