About the English Language

English is a language of West Germanic origin with roots in England. English is perhaps the world’s most widely used language and it is rapidly becoming the language of wider-communication on the global scene with the spread of Internet and other communications technology.

It is estimated that there are between 309 and 400 million native English speakers and perhaps as many as 1.4 billion speakers of English as a second language.
