About the Hmong Language
The Hmong language has two main dialects: White and Green Hmong. The difference between the two dialects, however, is not much more significant than the difference between American and British English. The Hmong language is one of a group of similar languages known as the Miao-Yao languages. In addition to being spoken by Hmong people in Vietnam, Burma, Thailand, and Laos, Hmong is spoken by a considerable number of Southern China's Miao minority. For many centuries, the Hmong language was based on oral communication only and produced no alphabet or written texts. During the early 1950s, a team of American and French linguist-missionaries endeavored to create a standardized system that could be written using the simplest typewriters and without having to make use of any elaborate markings or accents. Within a decade their system became very popular and has remained the most widely utilized system of Hmong writing to this day.
