The Hungarian language has approximately 14.5 million speakers, of which about 10 million currently live in Hungary. Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language used
primarily in Hungary and nearby areas of Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine, Slovakia and Romania, all of which are territories that were lost by Austria-Hungary after their defeat in World War I. It has been asserted that Hungarian is a relative of Hunnish, particularly becuase Hungarian folklore demonstrates great similarities between the two groups, though this link is can not be proven. There are other theories that hold that Hungarian is a derivative of the Sumerian language. Since 1869, it has even been disputed whether Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language or if it is related to a greater degree to the Turkic language family, a conflict dubbed the the "Ugric-Turkish war". Hungarian is the official language of Hungary and is an official language of the European Union. Hungarians call their language Magyar.
