About the Malay Language
Malay, an Austronesian language, is spoken by the Malay people which are indigenous to parts of Sumatra, Singapore and southern Thailand, as well as the Malay peninsula. Malay is the official language of the nations of Malaysia and Brunei and is one of Singapore's four official languages. Among Malaysians, the language is known as Bahasa Melayu (which is also referred to as Bahasa Malaysia) or Malay (also known as Malaysian). A form of Malay, called Bahasa Indonesia, was adopted as the official language of Indonesia. In Brunei and Singapore, it is known as Bahasa Melayu or just Malay. The reason that multiple terms were adopted is largely political as Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia are essentially the same language. While speakers of one language can easily understand the other, the two do have small dissimilarities in vocabulary and spelling. Bahasa Malaysia is different from Bahasa Indonesia in that is has not incorporated words from the Dutch or Javanese languages as has it's Indonesian counterpart.
