Oromo is an Afro-Asiatic language spoken in the Oromia territory in Ethiopia, and also in parts of Kenya and Somalia. The Oromo People number about 25 million. It is the most spoken tongue in the Cushitic language family. Oromo is spoken in many dialects, and none of them has predominated as a privileged dialect or standard form. Many dialects are not intelligible with the others. About 40% of the inhabitants of Ethiopia are able to speak some Oromo. After Arabic, Swahili and Hausa, it is Africa’s most spoken tongue.
