About the Pushto Language
Pushto, also spelled Pashtu and Pashto, is one of Afghanistan's national languages (Dari Persian being the other). Pushto is the native language of Pushtun people indigenous to Northwest Pakistan. The major Pashto speaking areas of Afghanistan are Kabul and Kandahar, while Pashto is also widely spoken in the Peshawar area of Pakistan. There are an estimated 8 million speakers living in Afghanistan (a figure which represents about 50% of the population) and almost 9 million living in Pakistan (or about 13% of the population). Pushto has two major dialects: the Western Pushto dialect spoken in Afghanistan and its capital, Kabul, and the Eastern Pashto dialect spoken in the area of northeastern Pakistan. In Afghanistan, Pushto is considered less prestigious than Dari, the Persian dialect spoken primarily in the northern and western parts of the country. The Pushtuns are forced to learn Dari out of necessity as it is Afghanistan's language of business and higher education.
