About the Slovakian Language
Slovakian is the official language of Slovakia (formerly the eastern part of Czechoslovakia) and is the mother tongue of an estimated 5.6 million people living mainly in Slovakia and surrounding areas. There are approximately 500,000 Slovak speakers in the United States, over 100,000 in Hungary and the former Yugoslavia, and perhaps as many as 20,000 in Canada and Russia. Slovak is part of the West Slavic sub-group of Indo-European family of Slavic languages. Other members if the group include Polish and Czech. Slovak has three major dialectical groups which are geographically fragmented by numerous mountain ranges. They are Western Slovak, Eastern Slovak, and Central Slovak, the latter serving as the foundation of the modern language. All dialects of Slovak are mutually intelligible.
