About the Swahili Language
The Swahili language is one of Africa's most important and has become the language of wider communication in East Africa. Swahili is a Bantu language and the native tongue of the Swahili people (who don't constitute a homogeneous group but rather are composed of many distinct tribes) which inhabit a 1500 km piece of the East African coast that stretches from northern Mozambique to southern Somalia. There are a estimated 5 million native speakers of Swahili and another 50 million second-language speakers. The traditional home of the Swahili language is the island of Zanzibar off the Tanzanian coast. Today, Swahili is an official language of both Tanzania and Kenya. Predictably, the Swahili dialect spoken in Nairobi, Kenya incorporates a far higher number English words than that spoken by the coastal peoples. Swahili is the most widely used language in Tanzania.
