Telugu (sometimes spelled Telegu) is a Dravidian language of India, the third most widely-spoken language in India, with 74 million native speakers as of 2001. Telugu is the official language of the large Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also considered a classical language, due to its age and long literary tradition. The script is a variation from Brahmi writing. Urde, Pakrits and Sanskrit have exerted a strong influence on Telugu, such that much vocabulary has been imported from those sources. Though a standard written form of Telugu has been defined, it is spoken in a very large number of dialects, some of which are not intelligible to others.
