About the Zulu Language
There are a total of 9 million speakers of Zulu in South Africa today with an
additional 40,000 living in Malawi; 250,000 in Lesotho; and 15,000 in southern
Swaziland. Zulu is a member of the Nguni language group which includes Ndebele
(which is spoken in and parts of the South Africa and Zimbabwe), Swati, and Xhosa.
These languages are closely related and are mutually understandable. The principal
concentration of Zulu speakers is found in the northeastern Orange Free State,
in southeastern Transvaal, and in the Natal Province, particularly in Kwazulu.
Zulu is a dominant language in perhaps a dozen districts in Transvaal, and a major
district in the Orange Free State. Although English and Afrikaans are its recognized
official languages, Zulu is considered a main "national" language in
the Republic of South Africa where it has the largest number of speakers, more
than either Afrikaans or English.
