About the Brazilian Portuguese Language
Brazilian Portuguese was greatly influenced by contributions from Yoruba which
was introduced to the Brazilian territory by the influx of West African slaves.
During the 18th century, other differences developed as Brazilian Portuguese failed
to adopt linguistic changes taking place in Portugal. After Brazil became an independent
nation in 1822, Brazilian Portuguese was also heavily influenced by immigrants
from Italy, Japan, and Germany, particularly in the central and southern parts
of the country. In the 20th century, the split between the Portuguese and Brazilian
variants heightened as new words for technological innovations were incorporated
differently into the two languages. Brazilian Portuguese varies from that of its
European cousin in both its vocabulary and pronunciation, yet, remarkably given
its huge size, standardized Brazilian speech is consistent throughout the nation.
English words with a Brazilian Portuguese origin include tapioca, piranha, petunia,
cashew, macaw and toucan. There are some 150 million speakers of Portuguese living
in Brazil today.
