Marathi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Maharashtra state and in pockets of surrounding territories like Daman and Diu, Dadra Nagar Haveli and Goa. It is fourth most spoken language in India’s constitutional list of 22 native tongues. Estimated speakers are 70 million native, 20 million as a second language. Marathi has the distinction of being the oldest Indo-Aryan language with an established literature dating back to 1000 AD.
